Family Readiness Group
What is the Family Readiness Group?
The Family Readiness Group (FRG) is a non-profit group
consisting of all assigned and attached soldiers, their
spouses, and their children. Parents and extended family who
wish to participate are greatly encouraged and welcomed.
Each military unit has an FRG infrastructure, some of which
are active and others that are not. This website is from the
FRG of the 1-163rd Infantry Battalion Charlie Company for
the National Guard based in Missoula MT.
The FRG is officially affiliated with the military and must
abide by the rules that protect the safety and
confidentiality of our soldiers and their families. The
mission of the FRG is “to assist commanders in maintaining
readiness of soldiers, families, and communities within the
Army by promoting self-sufficiency, resilience, and
stability during peace and war.” In summary, the FRG has the
responsibility of preparing families during all stages of
deployment, reunion, and re-adjusting to civilian life.
Why is there a Family Readiness Group?
The Family Readiness Group is a concept that had early
roots among Army families, who banded together during war or
tours overseas or other isolated locations, to provide
information, moral support, and social outlets to their
members. The Army’s emphasis is the need for readiness and
self sufficiency among Army families in the modern Army.
With today’s smaller Army, reserve units train for
war-fighting and peacekeeping missions and experience
remarkable turbulence and uncertainty. These soldiers, their
families, and their friends endure frequent separations
during training and overseas missions. Therefore, all units,
soldiers, and their families must achieve and maintain a
high state of readiness. Building a strong, active Family
Readiness Group is critical. In a very real sense, FRGs aid
the soldiers and their families in each military mission
through readiness, support, information, and
self-sufficiency of soldiers and family members.
