Employment

The job market in Missoula is vibrant and diverse and boasts a strong entrepreneurial component. Once known for its low wages, Missoula has seen a steady increase in wages since 1999 with an increase of more than 4% each year from 2002 – 2005. The major industry sub sectors are retail trade, health care and social assistance, local, state and federal government, and educational services. Other major sub sectors include transportation, and construction. In the past couple years the fastest growing sub sectors of the economy included mining, utilities, finance and insurance, and real estate rental and leasing. The Missoula Industrial Park is a thriving locale that’s home to a variety of industries from a DirecTV Call Center employing about 1,000 people to small manufacturing establishments and research facilities.

Missoula is home to the University of Montana and the U of M College of Technology and serves as a major cultural center for the state. The arts and entertainment businesses provide jobs for significant numbers in art galleries, museums, theatrical playhouses and symphonies and orchestras—not to mention those entrepreneurs who are flying solo in the entertainment industry. Recreational opportunities abound in the surrounding area—50 parks, 21 health clubs, 11 golf courses, 3 rivers, 4 ski areas and miles of hiking and biking—so seasonal employment is another key component of the Missoula economy.
