As the first chartered credit union in Montana in 1931, Montana 1st provided a cooperative alternative to traditional financial institutions in Western Montana. Originally chartered to serve the needs of federal employees living or working in Region One of the United States Forest Service, the credit union expanded its charter in 1999 to include citizens of Missoula County and the surrounding six counties. In 2012 Montana 1st united with Horizon Credit Union to expand membership opportunities throughout the Northwest. Horizon Credit Union was chartered in 1947 to serve Kaiser Aluminum employees. The credit union has continued to expand to provide convenient access to members throughout the Northwest with 20 branches spanning across three states.
